“Ancient systems of medicine like Ayurveda in India or classical Greek medicine gave close consideration to the astrological influences” (Frawley, 2000). When we combine the sister sciences of Ayurveda and Jyotisha, we find a complete system of health and wellness that reaches all aspects of human functioning in mind, body, soul (psyche), and spirit. Ayurveda is a holistic and proactive system of healing with its roots growing out of India. While Ayurveda certainly treats illness, it also teaches us how to effectively move through the rhythms of life with balance and harmony. It utilizes food as a form of medicine and understands the innate healing intelligence of the body and its relationship with nature and her cycles. Ayurveda translates as Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge. Therefore, it is a “science for life” offering us wisdom that encourages us to maintain our health so that we may reach our fullest potential while also taking into account our unique constitutions.
Vedic Astrology, a.k.a. Jyotisha, “precedes that of the other sciences” (Frawley, 2000) in that it connects the movement of the planetary spheres (the heavens) to our lives on Earth recognizing that which is above influences that which is below. Furthermore, the native’s astrological birth chart shows quite clearly one’s inner world, or psyche, reflecting what we do in the world and how we feel. Vedic Astrology shows the soul’s blueprint or Divine essence and life path of the native.
Through pulse analysis and examination of the native’s astrological birth chart, we can see personal constitution, potential diseases that are acute or more serious, emotional implications that affect health, time periods of strong or weak health, and predisposition to disease or imbalance. While the pulse gives us real-time information about the native, incorporating the birth chart in the Ayurvedic Assessment gives us a past, present, and future snapshot of the native’s internal and external reality.
