Many people today are suffering from stress-related disorders including anxiety, depression, and mental and physical exhaustion. Life seems to be moving faster than ever before creating ongoing expectations and pressure that many adults are finding overwhelming. Being in the mental health field for over 20 years, I have seen a definite trend toward an increase in stress and trauma-related symptoms producing complex auto-immune related health disorders as well as insomnia, low libido, anxiety, depression, and imbalanced emotions.
Survivors of trauma often seek therapy services; and while talk therapy has been proven to be very beneficial, there are additional tools we can implement as care providers that tap into deeper layers of the psyche and assist people in processing deeply embedded cellular memory created as a result of stress overload. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is mental health condition that can develop after experiencing a traumatic event like being at war, rape, abuse, assault, or a major accident. The National Center for PTSD “estimates that under normal and usual socio-political conditions 8% of the US population will experience PTSD at some point in their lives, with women (10.4%) twice as likely as men (5%) to develop PTSD.” Although a complex and difficult disorder, essential oils can help alleviate, and even in some cases, reverse the symptoms commonly experienced from stress and trauma.
Whether you are a therapist or a client, using aromatherapy is an empowering experience. My goal is to help facilitate sustainable healing in my practice by using aromatherapy as a tool to help reestablish an innate connection to their body’s own ability to heal itself. Aromatherapy is an excellent and readily available tool for those who desire a more holistic approach to self-healing.
